Whether you’re a developer, designer or a budding entrepreneur its always good to recognize all the different file types and what they mean. Some of them are used by a wide range of people and some are used more in a niche industry. Anyway hope you find this useful if you weren’t already too knowledgeable on this topic, it would be more of a book than a blog post if I went through them all, so to keep things short and sweet I have just noted down the main ones.

PHP – Hypertext Preprocessor – This script creates the functionality servers making things a lot more dynamic.

CSS – Cascading Style Sheets – This is the file that holds the styling for the elements of a page.

JS – JavaScript – This is the language that developers use to make websites and widgets function.

HTML – Hypertext Markup Language – This is the code that makes up most web pages, it generates the framework that everything shelves onto.

PSD – Photoshop Document – Everybody knows what Photoshop is right?! If not then this is the organic file format for an Adobe Photoshop document.

AI – Adobe Illustrator – This is the organic file format for an Adobe Illustrator document.

PNG – Portable Network Graphics – This format is great if you want to use an image or graphic with a transparent background.

JPEG – Joint Photographic Expert Group – This is the standard file format to compress images, basically make the file size far smaller.

FLV – Flash Video.

AVI – Audio Video Interleave Microsoft’sts answer to video format.

MOV – Basically is what it says on the tin, video format (mov… movie).
